Surgery for cataract problems can actually be performed at any level of its development. Some cataracts can be removed even if the cataract is still not ripe. The surgical procedure of this treatment can be done in a hospital or a clinic. Cataract treatments are only recommended to those whose vision are not any more normal and interfere to their activities.
Before And During Cataract Treatment
Two weeks before the surgery, you need to see your ophthalmologist because he/she needs to run tests on you. The tests will help the doctor determine which technique he/she will perform on you. Some physicians require their patients not to eat or drink anything for 12 hours before the surgery will begin. When you will arrive at the hospital, there will be eye drops that will be given to you so that your pupil will be dilated. This is done so that the area around your eye will be washed, cleaned and cleared. The surgery usually lasts only for one hour or some even less than that. Some patients who undergo cataract treatment just want to be awake while they are being operated and some wants to go to sleep.
Cataract Treatment Techniques
There are actually three basic steps in cataract treatment. The first one is Phacoelmulsificationwhich is also the most common form in treating cataracts or if cataracts are removed. This is also a modern method which only requires 30 minutes to be done with the surgery and wouldn’t require you to wear an eye patch. The second type of cataract treatment technique is the extracapsular cataract surgery which is used for advance cataracts. This requires a number of stitches to close the larger wound. Unlike the first technique that I mentioned, extra capsular cataract surgery requires an eye patch after the surgery. The third and last technique for cataract treatments is called intracapsulat cataract surgery which is a larger surgery. This procedure is rarely used nowadays but is very useful when trauma arises.
Problems After Cataract Treatment
Some problems may arise after the cataract treatment but this is only in some cases. Some discomforts that may occur are infection, bleeding, inflation, loss of vision, double vision and high or low pressure. Another problem that may be present after cataract treatments is called after-cataract. This after-cataract side effect is a condition in which the eye tissue becomes cloudy or may blur your vision after cataract treatment.
