Intraocular eye surgery is the surgery done to correct problems with vision such as cataract. This surgery aims in removing the lens, the eye’s natural lens known as crystalline lens which functions in focusing of light in the retina in order to visualize objects properly. The crystalline lens is an elastic membrane that is focused on the refraction of light for better vision and this has the capacity to change the focal point so that near and far objects are seen. In people with cataract, there is opacity in the lens which blurs the vision, making it hard to visualize objects both near and far. People with cataract is a good candidate for intraocular eye surgery procedure, this will be of benefit to them because a good vision yields a better quality of life.
The intraocular eye surgery procedure basically starts with a consultation to the health care provider. Your medical health care provider will be the best person to evaluate if you really need to undergo intraocular eye surgery procedure. Series of assessments and examinations has to be undergone in order to be certain on condition as this varies depending on the client’s current health status. After the case has been evaluated, side effects and post-operative recovery regarding intraocular eye surgery will be discussed.
Intraocular eye surgery procedure is usually done in an outpatient basis. Clients are then asked to skip a meal and to avoid drinking of fluids post-midnight or 12 hours before the time of the intraocular eye surgery procedure. Putting on of make-up is also not allowed when about to undergo intraocular eye surgery procedure. Upon arrival at the hospital, client will be given with mydriatics to dilate the pupils that will aid in the completion of intraocular eye surgery procedure; an anaesthetic agent will be given as well, it could be local or topical depending on your health care provider, to make the entire procedure painless. After the administration of the anaesthetic agent, the skin preparation will be followed; a thorough cleansing of the skin, then sterile linens will be placed around the skin of the eye and the head to get rid of possible infection that may occur after the intraocular eye surgery procedure. These steps comprised the pre-operative phase. During the intra-operative phase, a small incision will made into the eye through the use of operating microscope, defective lens will then be removed via sound waves or ultrasound that breaks the lens and will be aspirated or it can be done mechanically. The transplantation of the intraocular lens then follows, depending on the needs of the client. The choice of the type of lens to be used during the intraocular eye surgery procedure must be discussed by the health care provider. There are three types of intraocular lens namely, monofocal, multi-focal and toric lens. Each type of intraocular lens implants has different indications. After the intraocular eye surgery procedure, the eyes are then covered with shield that would serve as a protection.
A lot of changes will occur post-operatively; this includes proper eye care and getting rid of doing strenuous activities as this can affect the recovery of the client. Client will also be prescribed with eye drops and be used for a few weeks. As the eyes heal, the client will be able to experience slight blurring of vision for a few days following the intraocular eye surgery procedure.
