Lens exchange is used as an alternative to those who can’t undergo laser eye operation. This is applicable only to those who are at the age of 50 and above. The lens exchange procedure is done to correct the short and long sight of a person’s vision. Lens exchange is also known as refractive lens exchange, clear lens extraction and presbyopic lens exchange or PRELEX.
How lens exchange works
This lens exchange procedure is the alternative to other laser refractive surgeries. This procedure came to be since not all patients are suitable for laser eye surgery. This is true since there some patients out there that do not want to undergo laser surgery. Lens exchange is a method done on the eye that is somewhat similar to a cataract operation. The only difference between the two is that when done, the natural lens becomes clear and not anymore cloudy. An ophthalmologist usually uses a phacoemulsification which is the same shape and size as a fountain pen and has three main functions: disintegration of the natural lens, infusion of fluid into the eye and aspiration of debris.
Advantages of lens exchange
One of the main advantages of lens exchange is that it can extremely treat a patient more than that of an eye laser surgery. Another advantage is that after the lens exchange is done, you as a patient should expect a very speedy recovery since it doesn’t have a lot of side effects after. It has also been proven that visual results after the lens exchange is excellent and over the top. Once treated with lens exchange, you shouldn’t worry about cataracts no more. The surgery eliminates the chance of having a cataract again in your life.
Lens exchange recovery
To fully recover your eye after the lens exchange surgery, you should put padding over your eye to prevent it from having infections or irritations. A few hours after the surgery, it is normal that you will feel a slight discomfort and pain but it will die down hours after. Since you will be an outpatient only, then you can go home right away and rest but you need to make sure that someone will be taking care of you. Though you need not worry since after a day of rest, a visual improvement can be noticed right away but you shouldn’t rub your eyes for a week or two since you might irritate it or disrupt its healing process. With lens exchange surgery, an aftercare schedule should be done at least once a week but with your doctors’ discretion of course.
