Intraocular implant is being done during the cataract surgery, which happened in the mid 1960’s to 1980’s. In this year, only people with money undergo this type of surgery to remove the cataract in his eye and make his eye see more clearly. But cataract surgery is not enough to restore the sight of our eye. The natural intraocular lens of our eye has been removed because of the cataract surgery. You have to undergo an intraocular implant and replace your intraocular lens and have your eye sight focused and stable.
Nowadays, technology has improved in intraocular lens implant. Instead of wearing thick glasses, people would undergo a surgery to correct his vision after his cataract been removed from his eye.
Modern technology gives two type of intraocular lens implant used in cataract surgery. The first one is Monofocal intraocular lenses, which give a clear point of focus in the distance or close up, but choose only one focal point. Wearing of glasses is still required to provide extra lens and focus on other points such as reading. The second is Multifocal intraocular lenses. From its name multifocal, it provides two or more points of focus and may not need or require the uses of glasses.
These two types still depends on the persons’ vision. If the person is near sighted, multifocal intraocular lens is more advisable, while far sighted vision still prefers both monofocal intraocular lens and multiocular lens. This depends on the persons’ vision and need.
Intraocular lens implant may also be classified according to their design, materials used, type of lens such as foldable, and the positioning in the eyes.
Intraocular implant has two parts: First, central part which is the true lens component. It is called the “optic” and has a thin shape. Second is the “haptics”, which is located in the edge of optic, extending limbs. This usually keeps the optic centered on the line of vision. Combining these two types of intraocular implant, the lens can now referred to as single piece of plastic or one piece lens.
The optic part is inflexible or cannot be folded. The incision in the eye must be 5 to 7 mms in diameter to allow the lens to be put into the eye. However, newer lenses are flexible and can be folded. Once the lens implant is folded and introduced into the eye, either injection or forceps device, the lens is released and gently unfolds to its full size.
The doctors only give you choices but in the end, you will be the one to decide which lens fits you. But remember to take precautions in using different types of lenses and be very diligent in using which type of lenses would fit you. What is more important is that not how much it would costs you but the materials used in your lenses and the quality of intraocular implant used in cataract surgery to make you more beautiful and comfortable.
